Update Your Bookmarks

You probably do not need this; because you are already here.  However, it’s something to share with your friends:  The Region 21 website has a new address.  It is now aisregion21.org (with or without a www prefix).  The AIS list of Regional Websites has been updated; but, there may be other sources still having the old address (which was dot com rather than dot org).  You can help us by letting us know where they are or updating them yourselves.

Thank you for encouraging everyone to get the new address.

Youth Ackerman Essay Reminder – Deadline March 31st

The Ackerman Youth Essay Contest deadline is approaching and I have been asked to remind the youth in our region to please enter.  There are two $100 awards (to a junior youth winner and to a senior youth winner) given by the AIS Foundation.  Region 21 usually has several youth enter, but so far this year, they have not received entries from Region 21.  It looks like the contest is wide open, and I really think our youth have a very good chance to win one or both of those awards this year.  The kids have about 3 weeks to get their entries in to Carol Warner ( draycott@qis.net ) before the end of the month.  If there are AIS youth members in your clubs, in your household, or that you know about, please remind them to enter.
Just a reminder, the topic is: “If you were an iris, which one would you be and why?” and the deadline this year is March 31st.

Two of our Region’s members received Honorable Mentions for their AIS 2014 Photo Contest entries.  These were Eunice Cernohlavek from the Lincoln Iris Society for “Loreley” in the Landscape Division and Stan Sass from the Greater Omaha Iris Society for “Silk Run in Duo” in the Close-Up Division.

Congratulations to both of them!

And thank you to Linda Wilkie for including this in the GOIS newsletter (34 Number 6) where I learned about it.  You can see the newsletter on our Newsletter page.

Newsletter Resources Page on Iris Encyclopedia

The AIS Iris Encyclopedia (also known as the Iris Wiki because you can edit it) has a Newsletter Resources page for all newsletter editors.  This has pointers to a number of American Iris Society resources and others you may find useful.

Thanks to Kathleen Sonntag, the Irises Bulletin editor, one of these resources is the style guide used for Irises.  It is available as either a PDF or Word (docx) document by following the links below.  Eventually we hope to have it as a page on the Iris Wiki so everyone can update it.

Kelly Norris and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden Featured in New York Times

One of Region 21’s own was featured in a New York Times article:  Botany’s New Boys.  It describes what is happening with the rejuvenation of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and includes Kelly Norris’s background in irises and horticulture.  No iris pictures; but, they do have a slideshow of the Botanical Garden and some plants to enjoy.  As an aside, Kelly and the Garden are part of the 2017 AIS National Convention so there will be irises to enjoy in the future.

Congratulations to Kelly and everyone at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden!

Lincoln Iris Society Meeting – March 31, 2014

The Lincoln Iris Society is pleased to announce that Michael Moller, current president of the Tall Bearded Iris Society, will be speaking Monday, March 31, 2014 at 1015 Lancaster Lane, Lincoln, NE (St. Andrews Lutheran Church). We will be meeting at 6:30 p.m.  Guests are welcome!

Mr. Moller bought his first irises from Schliefert Iris Gardens right here in Nebraska. He subsequently moved to Colorado, where he started the Dr. Loomis Iris Test Garden and served as President of Elmohr Iris Society and as RVP for Region 20. He is a master judge and has hybridized several introduced cultivars. He currently lives in Georgia.

When I asked him what he would be speaking about, he enthusiastically replied, “Everything!” Pressed for specifics, he mentioned: how irises get their names, what’s wrong with the AIS judges handbook, and how to prepare your irises for shows. He emphasized that he wants all to bring questions.

I’ve spoken with Mr. Moller several times on the telephone; we always take up most of an hour, and I come away educated and just tickled—he tells great stories. A grand time will be had by all. This is a rare treat, and we hope to see you there.

SLI Convention Reminder – Registration Due March 15th

The deadline for registration for our Society for Louisiana Irises Annual Convention is fast approaching.    The convention dates are April 3-5, but registration is due in by March 15.  SLI members and guests still have an opportunity to register and spend a few great days in historic New Orleans.  On the garden tours, there are some great places to see irises and many other plants.

Our convention website has all the details:    http://www.louisianairisgnois.com/SLIConvention/   If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact me.

If you are in the New Orleans area and cannot attend all the convention events, consider at least some of them.   The Iris Show on April 4-5 in the Museum of Art is free and open to the public.  The garden tours will be great.  The dinners will be entertaining, especially the Silent and Live Auctions on Saturday evening.  You can register for whichever events you can attend, but keep the deadline in mind.  The tours, especially, may fill to capacity.

Hope to see you in New Orleans.
